Chashaku is the traditional Japanese spoon for serving matcha and is an important tool in the matcha tea ceremony.

Chashaku is the traditional Japanese spoon for serving matcha and is an important tool in the matcha tea ceremony. The curved end of the spoon is used to scoop a small portion of tea from the natsume or matcha container and place it into a bowl (matchawan). The mixture is then whipped to an even consistency with a bamboo whisk (chase). The amount of matcha served depends on individual preference.

Traditionally, tea or "usucha" is made with 1 chashaku of matcha (one teaspoon) and about 75-100 ml of warm water. This proportion is perfect for creating a perfect foamy texture on the surface of the matcha.

Koicha or thick tea is made with significantly more matcha 4-6 chashaku portions (4-6 teaspoons) in 150 ml of warm water. The resulting matcha is much thicker and sweeter. Whisking it is more difficult and this method does not produce the characteristic foam. It is served almost exclusively as part of the Japanese Tea Ceremony.
